The only two things you need to restart your company culture
Focus on hiring high quality, smart people
Hold them accountable
These two things can naturally help enhance 90% of your culture concerns. To enforce accountability, have teams outline the most important priorities and identity who would be blamed/fired if the projects failed. Second, set up time with those key people to make sure they know they’re held responsible for the key priorities.
How to avoid bullshitters
Bad people who are good communicators sneak through organizations because they’re better at talking about what they do than actually doing it. As you get more senior, the chances of hiring a bullshitter actually go up because they’ve become amazing at storytelling and managing up throughout their career.
To avoid bullshitters, add someone with veto power to the hiring process. This person should have no incentives to make the hire, so they can avoid human bias and make a judgment call on character.
Why one-star Glassdoor reviews can be positive signals
When evaluating company culture based on employee feedback, you must take complaints with a grain of salt. For example, a 1-star glassdoor review complaining about a lack of work-life balance and high standards often points to a competitive, high-achieving environment. However, complaints about unclear strategies, poor communication, or misdirected focus from the management team are red flags, as it's usually A-players who raise these concerns.
